You can expect quality work with M&M Builders

I wrote quality in red because I cannot stress enough how important it is to hire a contractor that feels and works this way. If you are interested in my thoughts and my story on this very important subject, then please read on.
 

I started in construction in the summer of 1975 when I was a junior in high school. I worked framing houses and got my union journeyman's card for carpentry five years later. One year later I was hired as a foreman framing houses with crews of up to 40 men. Two years later I went on to become a superintendent, building commercial buildings for a large company.

 

One day the owner of a commercial bank I was a superintendent at offered me a job to do custom woodworking at his own house. The offer was very generous and I agreed. I started working on his spec house and was assigned to work with an 80-year-old carpenter who was in charge of the job. After the first day of work, he handed me a 2" x 12" board and proceeded to draw a 12-inch line across the board with a pencil. He then said, “boy cut that pencil line in half with your skill saw, and I want to see one-half of that pencil line left on the board.”

I said, “That's impossible how could I cut a 1/16-inch thick pencil line in half with a skill saw, no one can do that.” He took the board from me and did just that. He said, “You have been working in framing and commercial work too long, they teach sloppy work. In one week's time, you either learn to cut that line in half or find another job.”

Over the next year, that great mentor challenged me in every aspect of construction and carpentry. He was a taskmaster that hone my carpentry skills to what seemed like his impossible standards. He taught me what old-world craftsmanship means, and to take pride in everything you put your mark on in this life.

Before I met him I had no idea that my work was mediocre at best, and from what I see around me these days most contractors never had the mentor I was so fortunate to have.

It is so unfortunate because the average client has no idea what excellence is and what to expect. Are they really going to know if they are getting the highest craftsmanship and quality? How do you know you are getting the best if you are not an expert in construction, or how many things can go wrong on a job that won't show right away.

​

I am not sure why there are contractors out there that do terrible work, but I see it weekly. Either they don't care, don't know their craft, or bid the job too cheaply to do it right. All I know is what the end results look like, how the clients thought they were going to get such a great deal, and now they are stuck with something in their backyard, designed poorly or built wrong.
