                             FROM DECK BLUEPRINT TO REALITY

    Quality

I wrote quality in red because I cannot stress enough how important it is and to hire a contractor that feels this way. If you are interested in my thoughts and my story on this very important subject then please read on.
I started in construction in 1975 when I was a junior in high school. I got my union journeymans card in carperntry four years later and was hired as a forman framing houses with crews of up to 40 men. I  went on to become a superintendent,  building comercial buildings for a large company.

The owner of a bank I was building was a hands on type of  person, he was on the job regularly checking on his project, asking a lot of questions and we got along great.
One day he went to my boss and asked  him if he would loan me out  to  him as a carpenter doing finish work on his spec house. He  had given our company a lot of large jobs and my boss told him yes.
One week later I started working on his spec house, I was assigned to work with an 80 year old carpenter whom was in charge of the job.  After the first day of work he handed me a 2"x12" board and proceeded to draw a 12 inch line across the board with a pencil. He then said "boy cut that line in half with your skill saw.
I said" That's impossible how could I cut a pencil line in half that is 1/16 inch thick, no one can do that" He took the board from me and did just that. He said" You have been working in framing and commercial work too long, in one weeks time you either learn to cut that line or find another job."
Over the next year I learned from that great mentor what it takes to be a craftsman, to truly understand construction and what the word excellence means.
I cannot stress enough how often I have gone on  a job, where the door sill is out of level and we have to  make the deck out of level so the job looks right.
How the concrete contractor laid his concrete 2 inches out of square and we have to blend in our wood so the job does not look terrible.
How oftern I fight with the lumber yards because they send out bad wood from the bottom of their piles and someone has to use it and I won't.
How often I will go to a clients house  where the  contractors before me has done poor work or mediocoure at best and because the client doesnt know any better, they ask me "What do you think of this beautiful work?" I never know what to say.
How often I have gotten calls from clients very upset asking if I can come over and fix a deck or arbor that some other contractor did such a poor job on. They hired the most inexpensive contractor because he promised to do great work and now the people were out the money, have an eye sore in their back yard and are very leary of contractors whom don't do what they say.
I have seen Contractors use cheap pressure treated wood for framing under the deck and a short time later, the underside of the deck rotted out.
I  have seen piers that weren't deep enough and the deck became out of level in 6 months or worse yet slid down a hill.
I could go on and on and on about this.

It is so unfortunate because the average client has no idea how many things can go wrong  on a job or what great design and quality work really is.
I am not sure why there are contractors out there that do terrible work, it is either that they don't care, don't know their craft or bid the job to cheaply.
All I know is what the end results look like, how the clients thought they were going to get such a great deal and now they are stuck with something in their backyard, designed poorly or built wrong.

I have created this website to show you pictures of what excellent design and quality work is all about with written customer testimonials to back those pictures up.
Even if you don't use my services and I can be of  help in any way shape of form, please give me a call. I am always happy to talk to people, even if you are not a client of mine.

There is a famous business philosophy that says " When you are number 2 you chase the competition, when you are number 1 you chase yourself." I never want to stop striving to better myself. It's all about the quest for greatness in what we create and what we do in this life.
